The Good, the Bad & the Queen were an English language art rock supergroup equanimous of singer Damon Albarn of Mistiness and Gorillaz, bassist Paul Simonon of the Disharmonism, guitarist Simon Tong of the Verve, and Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen. They released their cocky-titled debut anthology in 2007. Their second album, Merrie Land, coproduced with Tony Visconti, was released in 2018. They disbanded in 2019; Allen died in 2020.

Formation and debut album [edit]

The Good, the Bad & the Queen began equally a solo project by Damon Albarn with production by Danger Mouse. However, by July 2006, the projection had become a band,[iv] with bassist Paul Simonon of the Clash, guitarist Simon Tong of the Verve, and Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen. Albarn met Simonon at the nuptials of Clash singer Joe Strummer in 1997, and Tong had worked with Albarn on Blur'due south 2002 Think Tank tour, filling in as guitarist following the departure of Graham Coxon.[5] Allen contacted Albarn later on hearing the 2000 Blur single "Music Is My Radar", which references him.[5]

The Good, the Bad & the Queen played their debut gig in a hamlet pub in Devon on 20 October, followed by a performance at the London Roundhouse on 26 October as role of the BBC Electric Proms.[6] They released their first unmarried, "Herculean", on 30 October.[7] On 12 December, the band performed a secret launch gig exclusive to 300 chosen fans for Myspace's new characteristic The Listing in Wilton's Music Hall, East London.[viii]

The band released their self-titled debut album on 22 January 2007.[nine] Information technology was voted by the Observer Music Magazine every bit the All-time Album of 2007.[10] At this indicate, Albarn said The Adept, the Bad & the Queen was but the album title and that the band was "nameless".[6] Simonon said "nosotros didn't properly name the band, considering a name is for a wedlock".[10]

In October 2014, Albarn announced that a new anthology had been written and was waiting to be recorded.[14] In Apr 2017, in a new interview with Q, it was reported that an album was still in the making but that contempo events had caused the group to commencement afresh. Albarn told Q that Brexit had "given u.s. a wonderful starting point".[15]

On 17 October 2018, the band announced their second album, Merrie Land, produced by Tony Visconti. It was released on 16 November, equally "the right circumstances came about", nether the new label Studio 13 created by Albarn.[16] [17] Albarn described the anthology every bit "a series of observations and reflections on Britishness in 2018" and "a reluctant goodbye letter" following the Brexit vote.[eighteen]

The band performed the get-go gig for this album in Tynemouth on 26 November 2018, which was the starting time of an eight-date warm-up tour in UK.
